***Stuck to top for a few days, I’m taking a break from writing to work on Sumo Merriment‘s template (a task I promised to do and one I’ve put off for far to long). Please everyone (yes, you..lurker) join in.
We all “know” each other. We all visit the same sites, although there are a few that stop by here that travel in different circles. But, who are you?
I’m not asking for name, rank, and SSN, but maybe you’d see fit to disclose a little bit more about your selves here this weekend. Tell us what kind of work you do. Family. Kids. Something you’ve never revealed before. Come on, hop in the confession booth you lapsed Catholics!

Well I’m pretty up front about it on my blog, so this isn’t much of a confession…. but,
I’m an American living in the Czech Republic (8 years now). Essentially, I moved here because I wanted to live in a free country.
I married a nice Czech lady almost 5 years ago, but we still don’t any children.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Praguetwin, and I’d like to thank you for the writing you do at your place. You bring a unique perspective to the mix.

Oddly enough, Fred, since I know more about you than you do about me, I’ve wanted to correct that imbalance for some time, so you are gonna get my name, rank, and serial number. Brace yourself.
My name’s Grant, and I’ve mostly been an entertainment monkey. (Music, comedy, acting, writing, singing; whatever, really.) I’ve been lucky (and “luck” is the operative word, alright, not “skill”) enough to have some success in those areas.
I was raised a casual Catholic but I’m actually a Jew, although I wasn’t told that latter fact until my adulthood. (Very freaky family.) Now I self-identify as a Jew, though from a racial, and not a religious, point of view. I’m not an atheist, I’m an agnostic, but not the kind of agnostic that can’t choose between religions, the kind that believes religion to be a personal matter and organized religion to be hopelessly anthropomorphized.
I got married young and subsequently divorced young. No kids, now in a long-term uberrelationship with a wonderful lady who also married and divorced young, no kids. That works out well because neither of us want to get married ever again.
Although we’re seriously considering entering into a civil union.
Milady and I have moved around a lot. We’re still hunting for the perfect place to live but we’re more or less done with urban America, so my entertainment “industry” days are over. Now it’s more about finding the groove that best suits this second half of my life. (I’m, shall we say, neither young nor old. I’m that special age that rests right on the cusp between them, teetering on the edge of the abyss of middle age. Slightly older than you, Fred.) I still love to work in entertainment but now I’m focused on local scenes, a la Waiting for Guffman and the local Battle of the Bands.
I can clearly be seen on a YouTube video dancing at a small Phish show 15 years ago (can’t tell ya how shocked I was to find that) and I can be found on a couple of entertainment databases, though I ain’t revealing my last name or the stage name I adopted, at least not in full view.
That’s more-or-less it, except for the facts that I’ve studied martial arts and’ve competed in archery and firearms competitions since I was a kid. I only throw that in because it adds the necessary counterweight to the “entertainer”/Phish fan/leftist stereotype.
And there you have it. Remember, you asked.
My name is not Lew. I hold to no particular religious or political philosophy. I play guitar, write and sing songs no one will hear. I have two children from my first marriage, and the ways things are going there will be no second. I am an excellent chef, although lack of certification in that field prevents me from moving up to the big bucks. I am an award winning artist who has yet to sell any artwork (although I have had pieces stolen). But mostly, I am an unassuming and modest chap, the kind you’d like to have a drink with (if I drank).Speak.
Well first of all, I’m a recovering Catholic, meaning that in my qualified opinion, Catholicism is evil hypocrisy. I am a believer, and amateur bible student, and I don’t need somebody to preach to me.
Was a lead singer and sax player in a bar band for about 20 years, just mediocre enough to get paid and cover the bar tab. Once divorced, with three of the most fun and intelligent kids in the world, Girl 19, boys 17 and almost 14.
I live in Michigan, a beautiful state with lots of lakes and the dramatically changing seasons.
I hate Chimperor McSmirky and all his ilk.
That’s enough for now, and NO, you can’t have a urine sample.
Hello Fred. Been visiting your site for several years now. I took notice of your site because you were one of the first military to take a stand against the war in Iraq & I shared some common links – besides political. I live in Auburn and Im just figuring out that its not as bad as some people say! I left the Army as fast as I could when the first Gulf War was over….was 11B stationed in Alaska. Now Im an 8th grade history teacher. And I have a young daughter that a worry for each time I watch the news. Anyway…good work on the blog and I enjoy the pics and commentary!
I am Hill. I mainly just blog now. Used to be a newspaper reporter. 5 grandsons. Funny hubby I met on a street corner all those years ago. I live in the Hill Country of Texas at a place we named Deadleg.
I utterly and totally despise Dubya.The.Vile.Prick.
Oh yeah. I am a yellow-dog Democrat to the core.
And I have a loved young niece stationed in Iraq right now.
Did I mention I despise Dubya?
I took early retirement from UC Santa Cruz, sold the house and moved to the Olympic Peninsula in 2004. Roger and I are trying to grow as much of our own food as we can, and live as envirnomentally conscious as possible. We’re both hardcore democrats, atheists, and idealists. I never had children, by choice, but I do have three step-daughters.
We still think we can change the world.
I am a woman, a widow, a mother of 3 adult children, a peace advocate, an avid gardener, retired early, a red head, a friend, no religious affiliation, an independent and a blogger. I paint (egg tempra) and everything I have ever made is sold and now I’m on to something new.
Things you do know Fred, because we’ve met:
- Kvatch isn’t my real name (Duh!)
- In the marriage thing for the long haul (going on 18 years)
- No kids
- Software engineer/manager/computer security specialist
- Live in Babylon by the Bay (SF)
- Write a lot of verse
Things you may not know
- Amature genealogist but hoping to make this my career
- May not live in Sodom by the Sea much longer
- Write a lot of science fiction (never published)
You had me at “lapsed Catholic.” Bingo. Let’s see, lapsed Catholic, once divorced, twice married, and attorney by trade. No question; I’ll burn in hell for eternity.
3 kids in the first attempt at marriage, only one of whom will maintain any relationship with me. I guess parenting wasn’t my best trait.
Currently suffering through 2nd wife’s trial by breast cancer. Still optimistic, despite the bad news about eternity.
I am pretty up front on my blog as well. My name is Graeme Anfinson. I have lived in Fargo, ND since I graduated high school in ’99. I have 2 brothers and 1 sister in law that live in Fargo as well.(one of them blogs) I work at a glass factory and go to a community/tech college in neighboring city Moorhead MN.
I grew up in a small town about thirty or so miles from Canada. Because one of my parents is Canadian, I have dual citizenship and am seriously considering moving up there for a few years after i graduate.
Oh, and did I mention I’m an asshole??!!
We run in some of the same blog circles. I liked the fact that you are military and can speak with expertise about it at these times of political trials we are forced to go through.
I was scouted from High School in Los Angeles by the Disney people and offered a job as an animator at 17…I was way too introverted and never told my parents. The money would have been incredible.
I have a son from a first marriage and another son from the current marriage. My elder son has 2 sons that combined…are the anti-christ.
I am an atheist of long standing having in my childhood been raised as one of Jehovah’s (Yikes) Witnesses…thanks Mom! Couldn’t wait to grow up and leave.
I am an only child…and I am not selfish…nor do I demand attention. I am very quiet unlike most women and reading is the best thing since the wheel was invented. Music too…it soothes the savage beast in us all…well…except Dick Cheaty.
While I am not Greek my parents saw fit to give me an alphabet name that is frequently used in sororities. Which probably explains why I have an odd name for my blog…I must have been drunk at the time…trust me…I don’t look like a sumo.
Okay, I am 100% sure that I am not the father of Anna Nicole’s child.
Maybe you did already know that but I felt it was worth repeating.
I am the proud mother of Stella, Little Bit, Picasso, and Monet (canine and feline types). Grading papers is my life (but not my passion). I am passionate about my Peace Chucks and happy hour at Baja Bettys. In another life, I spent 1.5 years at an evangelical christian college in the midwest. I had more fun there than any good christian girl should ever have. They suggested I leave voluntarily before they kicked me out, so I took my party to San Diego, where I have been ever since. Happily recovered from the christian gig.
Can’t wait to see what you’ve done with Sumo’s place!
I’m 34
I work at UC Irvine, CA
I do research
I have a sciency degree
I work with another person who is getting a sciency degree but doesn’t believe in Evolution…(go figure)
I’m a Sagitarious
I don’t beleive in organized religion and have never registered with any political party.
I believe in freedom – I think drugs should be legal. I think we have the right to bare arms.
I don’t think government should be telling us what to do.
I think there is NOTHING wrong with gays marrying or adopting.
I am pro-choice
Death Penalty is difficult to discuss. I am mostly against it due to the fact that we have such incompetence in government that the odds of an innocent person being executed is great. I also think life in prison is a fate worse than death.
I think the only chance humanity has at surviving is to develop a cheap, clean unlimited source of energy (fusion anyone?)
With unlimited clean cheap energy we can then begin to do things beyond our imagination.
you know a bit about me, since we were stationed together in germany.
i have your site as my homepage on this computer and although its rare that i use this computer, i do enjoy reading yours and others opinions about …life. i’m pretty much a “lurker” ’round these parts. ha.
Thank you, everyone, for sharing. It’s as important as it is revealing to learn a little more about the people down in the trenchs with you. Builds the community, wards away some of the abrasiveness.
Hi. I’m chris, and I’m a blogaholic.
In non-bloggin life, I go by Chris or Kirk(my middle name). I am a weird mongrel, both in racial and political considerations. I consider myself a Redneck Liberal, and am one of the few people in the world who doesnt think Redneck is an epithet. At least not in my own definition.
I am an ex Rush-Limbaugh dittohead conservative. I am still a staunch fiscal and constitutional conservative.
I finally realized that everything that Limbaugh and his ilk say is complete and utter bullshit. I pine for politicians who stand up for what is right, and stand accountable for their actions. I have zero tolerance for corruption on either side of the fence and support harsh penalties for elected officials who fleece the flock for their personal gain.
And I live in the worst place in the world for a liberal non-christian to live: West Texas. I am just as loud and outspoken ir real life as I am on my rant and rave blog, which can make for a long day here in one of the most conservative cities in America. I DO however, stand by my conversion rate and I fight to open the eyes of my friends and family every day.
If it weren’t for you people, I would have went Belltower batshit long ago.
‘Preciate ya’ll.
For some reason Brad I think we already knew that one.
I guess I put this off long enough.
I have no idea what to say. I grew up very poor in Alabama. I was intelligent, so I was pretty much a loner. Went to college on a partial scholarship. I majored in microbiology. Married a guy I met in college. Both had to quit college for lack of money.
After struggling to get by for a while, we sold our soul to the military industrial complex. My husband joined the Navy. I really got political after he joined. Been stuck ever since, and I still can’t afford college.
I have no children, but I do have two cats. I am a bleeding heart because I actually care about people, something that is very rare these days.
lol appreciated Swan.
It seems I’m last, hopefully not.
I was born and raisedinto an Irish Catholic family just outside the Boston city limits. I went to Catholic school from grade one to twelve. Altar boy, choir boy. Religion had alot to do with me growing up, and for a long time I wished to be a priest. I am one, so to speak, but not a Catholic one. More of a priest of humanity I suppose.
In school I didn’t see the point in doing homework since it’s practice for what was learned in school that day. If I’d already learned it then why practice more? The nuns did not agree with me. Since I didn’t want to waste my parent’s money anymore, I decided to join the military. On my 18th birthday I joined the Marine Corps. I figured if I am going to put my life on the line, I may want to do it with people worthy of holding my bloodied hand. Fucked up and got married, then divorced, though I have two fantastic sons out of the deal, so there are always silver linings.
On the heels of that I met my Love. We’ve molded a life together since, two fantastic daughters. It wasn’t easy for quite a while (not that it is now but it’s better)inter-family problems. Mainly stemming from me. I took a step back, looked at my life and made a decision.
I now write essays and articles, paint murals, manage a restaurant, go to school, learn and teach as much as I can.
But most of all I enjoy my life, just the way it is, no complaints, no frills, just contentment.
My heroes are Da Vinci, Franklin, Sala Ad Din, Alexander, and my brother.
Namaste
I’ve been making conservatives cringe for three years less than Fred has. I’m a lapsed Catholic, agnostic, guitar-playing, beer-loving, soccer and music enthusiast. I currently work full-time as a corporate cube rat while earning an M.A. in American History part-time at UC Irvine. The rest can be found here. Oh, and I share a first name with the crazy Puritan preacher who wrote about sinners in the hands of an angry god…
