Spartacus speaks….

He limped out on stage like the geriatric he is. He smiled the familiar smile, one of a seasoned actor. It was difficult to hear his words because of his age.

“Ya know…one thing I’ve learned in my life. When you get this old you start to.. look, to take inventory of your life. And you remember the women, the money, the … everything. Then you look at the world then and now. And I think there’s too much religion.”

“Too much?”

“Yeah. I mean the only religion you need is love.”

Those were the words that Kirk Douglas spoke on the Martha Stewart show monday morning. I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night prior (2 hours), and up to meet the day nice and early I sat, smoked, and drank my coffee. I flicked the tube on to see the news. There wasn’t any (I don’t have cable). She was on, so I figured “screw it” and watched.

Hearing Kirk Douglas say this really struck me in an odd way. I think he’s more correct than even he could have thought.

In truth, I’ve grappled with this issue in my head many times over.

“What has religion done for mankind?”

The rewards of religion are in another possible realm of reality, not this physical plane. Humanity does not live on that plane, it’s merely speculation. We live in the physical plane, and while in some all too rare instances, religion has brought about some good things, rather good people. Yet the acts of the ungood religious folks far outweigh the acts of the good. Which brings us back to sqaure one. What good has it done us? If there hasn’t been all that much good coming out of religion or the concept of it, why does it still exist? I mean, Hemlock isn’t a part of the food pyramid, so why should religion be a part of humanity?

Religion exists because it’s a good way to make a ton of money without paying taxes on it (just ask the estate of L. Ron Hubbard). Also, religion is the main cause of war, which in turn lines the pockets of defense contractors (who worship the almighty dollar). Religion, in the hands of good people, (like Jesus H. Christ) does good, but in the hands of evil people (97% of his followers) it does bad things.

We have an existentialist in our midsts.

This is the theme of a radio show I only caught a piece of last night. Alternative Radio had Chris Hedges speaking about the ill of religion. I’ve always found him to be a sharp, enlightened individual.

religion had its place- in prior centuries. folks needed a way to explain their world and their lives- without the benefit of science and whatnot. nowadays, i agree with lew- it’s a money racket coupled with unbridled power for those at the top- think robertson, dobson, et al. religion has outlived its usefulness and tradition and clinging to the past is the only thing keeping it alive.

  5. Religion is SUPPOSED to be about love, nothing more. That’s where religion gets fucked up. I’ve read the bible front to back at least 4 times, and that’s the message that I got, but then again, I didn’t have a preacher tell me what it all means.

You read the bible and what you got out of it was love?
I got war. That’s just me.

Wow. Undeniable Liberal is RIGHT! Whaddaya know…. You got it right. Don’t let Bacchus OR the ‘preacher’ screw it up for you.
The only way people (Bacchus-the ‘preacher’- most all liberals) get the message wrong is because they think THEY are God.

No jackass, if I were GOD I damn sure wouldn’t make dolts like yourself.
