PoliShifter nailed it. What nobody seems to get is that we are not leaving Iraq. Once more with feeling: We are not leaving Iraq. The whole goal is secure as much oil as we can possibly grab without starting World War III (or is it IV) because we lack the national will to be constructive and creative in order to solve our energy problems. It is far easier to destroy an entire nation than it is to face the hideous reality that we had thirty years to address this problem and become leaders instead of conquerors.

Well as long as Bush is President and Republicans have 50+ members in the Senate, nothing will change for sure.

It's likey even with a Democratic President like Hillary or Obama, even with 60+ Democratic Senators, that we won't be leaving Iraq.

We went there for the oil and we're not leaving till we get it (that is, till Chevron, Exxon, BP, and Shell get it)

Bush made it clear he likes the Korean Model...Keep 30,000 to 50,000 troops in Iraq for the next 50+ years.

Even if the Democrats got pushed through some sort of troop draw down, my guess is it would be long and drawn out over 5 years.

The next phase will probably be to convince Americans that we're out of Iraq when we still have 60,000 to 80,000 troops left there. Troops will still be dying but if they can mask the statistics and keep Iraq off the front pages it will be mission accomplished.

September will be the terror spectacular with Petraeus's surge results coming on Sept 15th, surely after Bush gives numerous "remember 9/11" speeches telling us how much Iraq is the central front on the war on terror.

And remember, no checks are being written for this war, it's all being charged on plastic.

Say it ain't so? !

Actually Reid may have been wrongfully blamed for the pulling of the defense authorization bill:

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/07/18/kyl-mccain-dishonesty/

The Republicans blocked the up or down vote, not Democrats.

Anyway, Fade, thanks for the mention. Yesterday Bush issued an executive order that basically gives him the ability to seize anyone's assets and property if Bush deems that said individual or entity is hampering progress in Iraq.

We have long heard from BushCo that those who question the Iraq Strategy are aiding and abbetting terror.

Will Bush now start seizing the assets and property of those he considers dissidents or as he would say preventing progress from being made in Iraq?

I hope you are talking about Bermuda or Cuba or some other such island far away.

And no, they don't want it to end. My theory is that the ultimate goal of the troop surge is to place enough ground troops in Iraq for when we attack Iran (you know, in case they retaliate).

Pace was just talking about possibly adding more troops the other day. The Guardian had an article the same day that said the Bush admin. still wants to 'take care of the Iran problem' before the next president is appointed.

They want their world war and I don't see anything or anyone stopping them at this point.

I can't say I am surprised. What are they afraid of? They have the support of the American people.
